About Long Island Bahamas
The Real Bahamas!
Long Island, a jewel of an island located in the archipelago crown of islands in The Bahamas. Stretching about 80 miles long and the widest point on the island is approximately 4 miles. 'Yuma' was the original name for Long Island given by the native Arawak Indians before it was renamed 'Fernandina' by Christopher Columbus in 1492.

The tropic of Cancer line runs through Long Island, making the atmosphere feel as if you are on another planet...another world.
Long Island is said to be the most beautiful, picturesque island of The Bahamas because of its symphony of dramatic contrasts. On the 'norside', which is really the eastern shore overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, there are cliffs, caves and crashing waves of indigo. On the opposite side, the western shore, it's calm, tranquil, turquoise and aquamarine shades of blue overlaps with flats, mangroves and baby powder sanded beaches as far as the eyes can see.

The deepest blue hole in the world, Dean's Blue Hole (600 ft), is located at Turtle Cove west of the capitol, Clarence Town. Many blue holes exist throughout the island in settlements namely, Mileys, Dunmore and Simms.

Numerous cave and tunnel systems cover the island. The historical cave system where the Lucayan Indian Tribe and their treasure artifacts, such as the ceremonial stools 'duhos' were found is located in Mortimer's. The treasure find was discovered by Long Island native Carlton Cartwright. Another cave system is located in Mileys and the historical Hamilton's Cave where hieroglyphics are still visible on the cave walls to this day.

Scattered throughout Long Island are many ruins of cotton plantations, churches and houses built in the 1700 & 1800's. Adderley Plantation is located 'down' in the north. 'Up' south lies the ruins of Dunmore Slave Plantation named for the former governor, Lord Dunmore, of The Bahamas. Canals, wells, and walls built by slaves can still be found throughout Long Island to this day.
Columbus Point where Columbus Landed there is a monument erected. Climb to the top and experience a breathtaking panoramic view of Long Island. Located at Cape Santa Maria where the beach there is ranked amongst the top 10 in the world.
The Twin Churches built by Father Jerome, or Monsignor John C. Hawes an architect, world famous, he was also a poet, philosopher and sculptor. He he was ordained as a Church of England priest 'Anglican' and came to Long Island where he built St. Paul's Anglican Church. He later converted to Catholicism, returned to Long Island and built St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. Both churches are located in Clarence Town on opposite hillsides.
